14th and U Farmers Market Sexy Secrets!

Despite my supposed slavish devotion to farmers markets, I haven't done a local agriculture post in weeks! Each Saturday at 9:00 am I am at the 14th and U Farmers market where I pick up veggies, fruit, bread, phone numbers and other miscellaneous items. This week I was accompanied by Herb of DC Photography Intern Sasha Fierce to explore the sexy secrets of this market.

Here's the first secret: often the pumpkins are half price during the last hour. Buy one for carvin', one for lovin', and one for eatin'.

In ancient Rome chestnuts were once known as "Tree Oysters" and were thought to have male aphrodisiac effects. Buy the full crate! I don't judge, I just observe!

It is no secret that the cabbage is the least sexy vegetable. What do cole slaw, sauerkraut, kimchi, borscht, dolma, holishkes and "bubble and squeak" have in common? Right, cabbage! And flatulence!

I bought 3 heads.

Oh look, it's Dave the auditor!

That nice Mrs. Peaches from Kuhn orchards always has some great recipes to be picked up along with the best fruit ever!

Apples are in full season and I got some sexy "Northern Spy" apples for a gingerbread cobbler.

Kuhn's Orchards Apple Gingerbread Cobbler

4 medium apples, sliced
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup plus 3 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons cornstarch

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.Cook apples, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon and 1 cup of water until apples are almost tender.

Combine 3 tablespoons water with cornstarch, stirring until all lumps are removed. Stir into apples and cook until thickened. Pour into an 8-inch baking dish. Add topping. Bake 35 minutes.

Topping
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup molasses
2 tablespoons oil
1 egg
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Beat together the milk, molasses, oil, egg and sugar. Measure remaining ingredients into sifter and sift into egg mixture. Stir only until combined and pour over apple mixture.

The sexy secret? Molasses. Say it slowly Mooool aaases!
14th and U Farmers Market
Saturdays 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

This week at the market (from the 14th and U weekly email fro
m Robin Shuster)

Dear 14&U Fans

We have a new producer: Hareg Messert of Chez Hareg Pastries will be bringing her classic French cookies, biscotti, pannetoni, pound cakes-- and in the future, her cakes and pies! Hareg grew up in Ethiopia and trained in French speaking Senegal before she became a pastry chef at the Ritz Carlton in DC..... so she has both Italian and French traditions! Plus she makes Vegan cookies as well. She has a charming bakery-cafe on 9th Street called Chez Hareg which has been written up in the Washingtonian several times. Lots of FREE SAMPLES.

Don't let rain keep you away from the market or from meeting our newest producer! ;-) Bring your umbrellas, stay under the tents and you will be dry and happy. The tents are filled with great produce, salads, greens, pastured meats, fruits, breads, flowers, sweets, cheeses, honey, ciders and.... Halloween pumpkins. Garner still has summer produce -- yea for those Northern Neck farms-

News:

Beef at Truck Patch
Brussels Sprouts and Romanesco cauiliflower-broccoli at Truck Patch
Collards and LOTS of Peppers at Garner
Scallions at Mountain View

Mountain View: Always Pesticide -free Salad greens, bok choi, Chinese Cabbage, Red and Green tomatoes (think fried green tomatoes!), kale, Swiss Chard, Turnips, Beets, arugula, sweet potatoes, potatoes, scallions, mustard greens and eggs!

Truck Patch now has BEEF: steaks, ground, roasts, chuck, brisket, hamburger patties, flank, Grass -fed and finished on their own choice of grass or grain Brussels sprouts, romanesco cauliflower, cabbage, arugula, kale, spinach, mesclun, radishes, tomatoes, last of the vine picked heirlooms, a few peppers, red and white potatoes, broccoli, savoy and green cabbage (yes, you can buy just a half!) and that weird cone-shaped Romaneco cauliflower-broccoli. Looks like an Arcimboldo painting of people made of vegetable faces. Very flavorful. (Scientist have been fighting over whether it is a broccoli or a cauliflower.) Plus their pastured pork of all cuts and sausages and bacon.

Dolcezza: MORE THAN JUST A SUMMER DESSERT Some of their sorbets are savory....and many people use them as appetizers or serve them between courses. The Lemon Opal Basil is a perfect palate cleanser! Last week I fell in love with both the Pear and the Pumpkin Cinnamon flavors. The first is just like biting into a perfectly ripe bartlett and the second was a slice of a rich pumpkin pie. (With the added benefit that it has MUCH less fat and many fewer calories).

Keswick: Their 100% Jersey cow milk makes delicious yogurt, chocolate pudding and both aged raw milk and fresh pasteurized cheeses. Cheddars, vermeers and other aged raw milk cheeses. Lots of feta, quark, ricotta, too. Try some of Keswick blue cheese with a hamburger or steak! My favorite yogurt. Blue cheese and pear, apples and cheddar are cheese and fruit marriages!

Kuhn: Honeycrisp, mutsu, gala, empire, jonathan, elstar, cortland, jonagold, northern spy, and other apples along with tomatoes, lots of winter squash (Please please please try the Italian butternut!) , pumpkins of all sizes, shapes and colors, honey, chestnuts, onions, sweet peppers ,a few red raspberries, asian pears and bartletts. Cider made from elstar, jonamac, honeycrisp, gala.

McCleaf: Their cider is excellent for drinking cold or hot with mulling spices for our ( cooler evenings or cooking. Apples, UV filtered and Pasteurized cider, kale, squash, okra, tomatoes, peppers.

I've Moved my 401K !

I've moved my 401K to the pumpkin in my living room window. There's so little left it fits nicely in my Fairy Tale Pumpkin purchased at the 14th and U Farmer's Market.

And if the market continues to go down I will make a pie.

My Notorious Blogebrity

Despite my first name and picture being on this blog I am still startled when a stranger mentions my blog. Do that many people really read this thing? Or is my blog so limited in scope that my Blogebrity reaches no further than two or three blocks from my house which is where most of my interactions with the Herbarazzi occurs.

The latest encounter occurred at the 14th and U Farmers Market where one of the vendors asked if I had a food blog. Yikes, was I about to get a heirloom tomato facial? Had I suggested that his produce was less than organic? His carrots were limp? No snap in his snap beans? Crooked zucchini? No wait, I always have kind words for Farmers Markets--especially my home market! Feeling safe
from Swiss chard in a definitely unneutral spot I confessed that I had a blog but it wasn't about food.(1)

He said wasn't sure how he found my blog but he found it through random Googling (2) and liked it. Whew! Also he recognized me by the Tractor Supply Company baseball cap I was wearing.

Note to self if you are seeking Blogebrity, always wear in public the same clothing you are wearing in the profile picture of your blog. You not only save a lot of money but you will be thought of as eccentric and perhaps colorful, instead of cheap and crazy.

It was a beautiful August day here today and I hope you got out and enjoyed it.

Pictured above is "Chorus Line of Farmers Market Booty" August 9, 2008.

(1) Actually I don't know what my blog is about. I just know its not about grammar.
(2) Most random Google searches to my blog involve "High School Musical" or "TMNT"

Doin' Nuttin' Memorial Day Weekend While You Are Sittin' in Traffic

Everyone: What are you doing for Memorial Day weekend?

Herb of DC: Nuttin'

Everyone: Oh that sounds nice. (Translation: Bless your heart, you have no friends. And worse you must be poor.)

Everyone: So can you take care of my dog?

I love three day weekends here when the rest of you are gone. As long as one avoids the museums and Casas de Touristas it is very peaceful and quiet here. No lines. Easy parking. Everyone left plays well together. DC magically becomes a sleepy, small town.

While you are battling your way along Route 50 to the beach, I am in the brilliant sunshine working in my garden and listening to the birds sing. You may be stuck in traffic wasting $4 a gallon gas on I-95 but I am strolling through the colorful Dupont Farmer's market purchasing green garlic, asparagus, bread, crab cakes, and of course strawberries. While you stare at someone else's bumper on I-66, your dog and I are chasing squirrels in Logan Circle.

Oh and doing all of this is free. Really, who is richer this weekend?

The view out my front door, Memorial Day 2008. Where are the parked cars? Oh right. In Rehoboth.

I will have a fine broccoli crop soon that will rival anything you find at an Eastern Shore Farmers market. Zinnia "Green Envy" seedlings are starting to sprout in front of the Asiatic lilies. No signs yet of the herb seeds I planted though.

The strawberries at the Dupont Circle Farmers Market are sweeter than anything you will find at the Chesapeake House Rest Stop in Maryland (Exit 98).

For the price of a Brew Thru tee shirt in Corolla NC you could have stayed here and bought an armful of peonies.

Did you stop at the outlet Malls on the day it was cloudy and spend what was left of your Economic Stimulus check? If you had stayed and played local you could have snagged this sweet chair just sitting there on 13th St free for the taking.

Looking north on 14th St during what would normally be morning rush hour. I guess all the cars are still somewhere on the Bay Bridge. Honk if you love traffic!

14th and U Farmer's Market 2008!

Update 2009: The market will open Saturday May 2, 2009 (9:00am-1:00pm)

I missed visiting presidential candidate Hillary Clinton cut the opening ribbon of the 14th and U Farmers market and release 10 free range doves into the the air which she immediately shot down provin' that she is a good ole gal with farm cred. However, I did get there in time for the Breadline's delicious and chewy olive loaf which last year always seemed to go early in the day ever since the Bush twins proclaimed it the bestest bread ever for nursing a hangover.

The opening of the hyper competitive 2008 Farmers Market Pro-Am Season was kicked off with the Saturday May 10 debut of the 14th and U Farmers Market. Located in front of the George "Superman" Reeve's Center, the mart will run every Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

This Kuhns Orchard's rhubarb combined with strawberries trucked in from the Northern Neck of Virginia
will make a great pie when I get home. Or maybe I should use Cindy McCain's old family recipe?

What's for dinner? Mountain View Farm's green garlic and asparagus roasted in olive oil and sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. Michelle Obama is proud to make this for her family.

A simple farm maiden (possibly Amish) brings flowers to sell in the big city in order to save the family farm from foreclosure.

I am not of fan of the radish due to Herb Sr once forcing me to eat a radish as a child not realizing how delicate yet explosive my gag reflex was. Nevertheless, wipe out that mental image and take a gander at these weapons of mass projection--they are gorgeous!

Farmers Market Booty Still Life May 2008

Market director Robin Shuster has assured us that cheese will be available starting in June.

Like this blog needs more cheese!

Update: Sunday May 11

The number 1 rule in food blogging is to remember to take the picture before you start eating it. Needless to say it is a great tasting strawberry rhubarb pie!

Bloody Harry Potter Plot Details Revealed During Mount Pleasant Rampage

July 21, 2007, the publishing debut of beloved children's author J.K. Rowling's funny and endearing "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

Spoiler Warning: True plot details may be leaked below? Or not...

A beautiful day shopping and reading J.K. Rowling's latest and sweetest fable in Mount Pleasant, Washington DC's first street car suburb. During its heyday, many Washington luminaries including actress Helen Hayes, Washington Senators' pitcher Walter Johnson, and US Senator Robert LaFollette made their homes in Mount Pleasant. Now one of the District's most ethnically diverse neighborhood, all gathered on Saturday to hysterically discuss Harry Potter's latest adventure.
