Heard on the 4th of July! (Part 1--Lowes Staff Meeting)

Lowes, New Carrollton, MD
July 4th, 2008

Some say it is rude to eavesdrop but I really couldn't help overhearing your staff meeting you were holding July 4 at 8:00 am at Lowes. I mean how could I miss it since I came to your store early to buy paint and you were holding a meeting for 25 or so employees standing around the paint department? Why the paint department? Couldn't you have held it in the lumber aisle or maybe the garden area so everyone could have gotten some fresh air? It was very uncomfortable shopping in this department during the meeting since instead of the usual feeling of being ignored by just one employee I felt ignored by a vast army of red vested employees.

As I was looking through paint chips for the perfect shade of apple green ("Macintosh", "Apple Tree" or "Tart Apple") I was sorry to hear of the two employees who were recently fired for stealing. That's terrible! And so near a holiday too!

Next you explained the importance of taking your lunch break. This really concerned me. Why aren't Lowes employees taking their breaks? I personally want the associate mixing my "Granny Smith" paint to be well fed to avoid temptation of sipping from the paint can. Did the two who were fired skip lunch and were then forced to steal soft drinks from the cases by the checkout lines? Were they so weak from hunger they didn't notice the Weber grill accidentally stuck under their coats as they left?

Injuries are understandably a big problem with big box retailers. After all some of those boxes are very big! You were correct to remind employees to ask for help from another when lifting something heavy. I'm sure the fact that as you said, Lowes has to pay $25,000 into a fund every time an employee files a Workman's Comp claim had nothing to do with your concern. I could tell you were a people person!

Some woman then spoke about overtime. I had moved beyond the perfect shade of apple green and mostly was comparing the green virtues of "Honeydew", "Cabbage Green" and "Monet Moonrise" but I think I heard her say that some Lowes employees forget to record their overtime hours and then don't get paid for it. Lowes is lucky to have such noble employees who don't take breaks and refuse to get paid for their overtime! Think what the prices would be if they didn't have such dedicated employees!

Pete was asked if he had anything to say. Pete didn't. I wished I had asked him if he preferred the green of "Parsley Sprig" over "Green Tea" for his kitchen.

We ended the meeting with a cheer:

L clap clap clap
O clap clap clap
W clap clap clap
E clap clap clap
S clap clap clap

Lowes!!!!!

As the employees disbursed to their respective departments ("Don't forget to straighten the merch as you go up and down aisles today!") I heard one young man say to a woman as he held up his arm in a soft cast, "Do you think he was talking about me?"

With the area suddenly empty I made my way to the counter, clutching my paint chips for "Green Grape" and "Sonic Lime" in hand and tried to make eye contact with the one employee left in the paint department.

She stepped out of the paint area and disappeared.

Back to normal.

Best Buy and Me!

So finally blogging is starting to pay off! In recognition of
my power and influence over my tens of readers, Performance Service Plan vendor Best Buy has invited me (and a date!) to attend its DC USA Pre Grand Opening in Columbia Heights on March 26 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. "The Buy" (influencers like me know to call it "The Buy" not "The Best" or heaven forbid "Best Lie") has even sent me coupons for up to 12% off. Sweet! A party! And I get to do manly electronics shopping. It's like a Tupperware party with a dope selection of Big Screen TVs!

Will this event generate the same blogging frenzy that the opening of Target generated? Or will DC bloggers return to their usual "been there done that got the DC Blogs T Shirt" attitude and ignore this like they ignored the opening of Marshalls?

See you there on Wednesday! Well see you as long as you or "Current Resident" received the coveted invitation.

The First Annual Target State Fair Opens in Columbia Heights!

Finally the long awaited DC USA Target State Fair has opened in Columbia Heights so personal assistant/photographer/food taster JessiCub and I decided to hit the grand opening of the midway for a day of fun!

First we followed the Munchie Map to find Corn Dogs. Everyone at the State Fair wants a Corn Dog even if it is a little early for National Corn Dog Day! The only thing better is a deep fried Twinkie but that booth must have been closed today.

Next we hit some dope amusement park rides. No wimpy "Small World After All" or lame "Flying Tea Cup" rides here! I hold on for dear life on the "Screaming Cyclone Shopping Cart Roller Coaster" and I am whisked to the summit of Mt. Columbia. Really regretting that Corn Dog now!

Rocketing back down to 14th St I notice I have some company on the "Screaming Cyclone Shopping Cart Roller Coaster." Someone has hurled into my cart. Hurled closet organizers. Cool! Hey maybe someone else queasy can cough up a Thomas O'Brien® Coverlet (chocolate).

Knees shaking and still a little wobbly I wander over to the Entertainment Complex to take a break and catch a show. So who will be featured at the Target State Fair? Some classic group like The Oak Ridge Boys or comedian Yakov Smirnoff? Oh my god! High School Musical! A little bit of East High here in the CoHe! The Target State Fair is just too awesome for words! Anyway...What team? Wildcats!!! What team? Wildcats! WHAT TEAM? WILDCATS!!!

Although the day is getting late I cannot leave without trying my luck at some Carnival games. Since the Pie Eating Contest is already over I enter the Bath Tissue Lifting Contest and astonish the crowd with my strength and dexterity. 24 rolls baby! Only $11.00! And I win a little goldfish in a bowl!

Finally with my appetite temporarily sated, my arms full of fashionable bargains, my closet soon to be organized and the DC Treasury a little richer, we decide to say goodbye to the DC USA Target State Fair mascot, Mayor McSpeedy, and head for home. We will be back! After all, The Bed Bath and Beyond Mixed Martial Arts Challenge premieres at the DC USA Complex in another two weeks and I have been practicing my rear naked chokes.

Well we try to get home. There is a typical DC traffic jam trying to exit. Sigh...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Versus DC Gentrification

Everyone's favorite underage anthropomorphic turtle misfits, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have left the sewers of Manhattan to fight crime, litter and gentrification in DC in a colorful wraparound mural to promote the Meat Market Gallery's Performance Week.

Located at the corner of 14th and T NW, this exhibit once again demonstrates the prominance of the Logan Circle area as the new center of the local art movement.

"I see London, I see France! Where are the Rapture Loft occupants?"

Wait, isn't this the former site of the Church of Rapture that was featured in a two part article in the Washington Post about the impact of gentrification on this very corner?

Is this loft conversion another project that has been put
on hold due to the economy? Did God help the Church of Rapture's Doctor Theresa make the real estate sale of the decade just in time? If so will he advise me before my adjustable rate mortgage... adjusts?

With no lofty granite countertops or rapturous churchgoers this leaves me and
my rarely washed Carhartts to take on Raphael's sai as I protect brunchers at neighboring Cafe Saint-Ex from his sarcasm and unrelentless demands for simple pizza.

Leonardo joins reporter April O'Neil as she gets the scoop on the new three story bar/restaurant "Policy" rumored to be opening on the northwest corner of 14th and T which has some residents concerned about increased noise and more parking difficulties. Will this project succeed in the new reality of today's real estate climate?

Gentrification or not one thing remains the same on this corner and the Foot Soldiers join me in my Sisyphean battle against chicken bone litter that has engulfed 14th St.

Wow! In such a short time from Church of Rapture to Rapture Lofts to Meat Market! I think it is going to be another tough year. We are all going to have to remain calm, Rocksteady and pray for future real estate rapture.

The New Whitelaw Market

No botox for this formerly gritty 13th and T NW landmark across from the historic
Whitelaw Hotel but a full fledged facelift! The Whitelaw Market, once home of dusty bottles of Rock Creek Cola and several dead freezers, has been renovated and now offers more products and wider aisles under new management. The expanded wine section offers many moderately priced wines that you would not be embarrassed to take to a dinner party. Well, at least I wouldn't be embarrassed.

Drop by and support our neighborhood merchants and make a stand against the 7/11ization of Logan/U!

UPDATE 1/16/2008: And now there is an ATM inside!
