Judging from the clean break, I'd guess it wasn't lightning. Trees tend to have their bark blown off when they get struck. My guess is that the abundance of beautiful flowers, with the additional weight of the rainwater, was no match for the wind.
Yeah, it was a weak spot on the trunk, I see a little evidence of rot as well. And it was too fabulous at that moment and the weight of its fuscia fabulousness was too much to bear in the storm.
