If Your Blog Goes Stale, Have a Cheesesteak!

After not blogging for a while I feel that my comeback post should be something memorable--perhaps a scathing indictment of the Health Care debate or some funny story with a sad twist at the end that brings a tear. Upon reading this entry, Herb of DC fans everywhere would rise as one and say "Who the heck wrote this for Herb?"

So I'll write about Cheesesteaks.

Not Cheese Steaks.

Cheesesteaks from JJs Cheesesteaks 1939 14th St NW (corner of 14th and U). 202-518-7777. Authentic Philly style Cheesesteaks here in the 'hood.

I have to admit I've never had a Philly Cheesesteak in Philly. I've had them here in DC from various "delis" with ingredients consisting of a variety of beef, chicken, sausage, pepperoni, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, green peppers, mushrooms, spinach, chipotle peppers, olives, capers, eggplant and memorably once--shrimp.

Cheese toppings have ranged from provolone to mozzarella to apple wood smoked cheddar. Spices from salt and pepper to oregano to cumin.

Shall I mention the local "deli" option of a whole wheat bun?

After sampling an "All American" during JJs soft opening (lean steak, chicken, onions on a soft white sub roll topped with American cheese) I was 5th in line for today's Grand Opening at Noon.

The Special: $1.99 Cheesesteaks from Noon to 4:00 am. (today only).

I ordered the "Ben Franklin" or the "BF" as the staff called it. Extra lean thinly sliced rib eye steak grilled to perfection with onions on a soft white sub roll topped with provolone cheese and Cheez Whiz. Yes Cheez Whiz! It's authentic baby, straight from the City of Brotherly Love and Cheese Food products!

After one or two bites of culinary heaven I now know why Philadelphia football fans once famously booed Santa Claus at halftime--they thought he was there to take their beloved Cheesesteaks back to the North Pole to feed Mrs. Claus and those hungry, hungry elves.

Did I mention that they are Heavenly? (The Cheesesteaks, not the elves).

At 14th and U. Now serving.

Rapturously Yours,

Herb

Update:

Recently the FTC published rules requiring bloggers to disclose when they are writing about a sponsor's product or have been supplied samples or other gifts. My uncompensated endorsement here today is based purely on my own purchases this week; however, I would consider weekly rave reviews of JJs in exchange for a steady supply of Cheesesteaks and Beta Blockers.

Cornerstone Cleaners Part 4: The Nightmare Ends

Last night after fighting my way through the throngs of Mainstream News Media covering this story, I was finally able to retrieve my five blue and white shirts that had been held hostage at Cornerstone Cleaners. Thanks to all of you for your kind words of support and encouragement during this difficult time.

Cornerstone will also be open today from 3:00 - 8:00pm for customers to pick up their clothing.

Meanwhile DCIST commentators discuss
who first reported this story.

Dry cleaner closes; customers can't get clothes

Updated 12:15 AM EDT, Wed, Mar 25, 2009

Another Washington-area dry cleaner could be facing a lawsuit soon.

Customers who have stopped by to pick up their freshly-pressed items at Cornerstone Cleaners on U Street Northwest have been greeted by locked doors.

Some who tried to call the owner were told their clothes might be at an off-site facility. Others only got a message saying the voice mailbox was full.

This week, a handwritten note appeared in the door. It says the cleaners has gone out of business. Customers are directed to the building's management company.

Landlords opened the building Monday to help customers reclaim some of their items. But many left empty-handed; their clothes supposedly at the off-site facility. But the landlords don't know where that is.

"I have 20 shirts in there," said former Cornerstone client Suleiman Vick. "That's [worth] like, $200."

Stay tuned to find out if any administrative law judges have pants missing.

Cornerstone Cleaners Where Are You?

Pardon this interruption to the usual political satire, essays on social mores of the 21st century and paeans to Pop Tarts that make up Herb of DC but I need to ask for your help to look for my shirts.

Yes, my shirts.

My five blue and white shirts that I dropped off at Cornerstone Cleaners on March 7, 2009. The five blue and white shirts that look just like the other ten blue and white shirts in my closet. I returned March 19, 20 and 21st to drop off more blue and white shirts and to pick up my clean and neatly pressed blue and white shirts and the establishment is closed with no sign indicating why it is closed or when it will reopen.

My three pairs of khaki cargo pants and two pairs of dark green cargo pants are quite concerned. I haven't told the Dockers yet (gray, two pairs).

14th and U Farmers Market Sexy Secrets!

Despite my supposed slavish devotion to farmers markets, I haven't done a local agriculture post in weeks! Each Saturday at 9:00 am I am at the 14th and U Farmers market where I pick up veggies, fruit, bread, phone numbers and other miscellaneous items. This week I was accompanied by Herb of DC Photography Intern Sasha Fierce to explore the sexy secrets of this market.

Here's the first secret: often the pumpkins are half price during the last hour. Buy one for carvin', one for lovin', and one for eatin'.

In ancient Rome chestnuts were once known as "Tree Oysters" and were thought to have male aphrodisiac effects. Buy the full crate! I don't judge, I just observe!

It is no secret that the cabbage is the least sexy vegetable. What do cole slaw, sauerkraut, kimchi, borscht, dolma, holishkes and "bubble and squeak" have in common? Right, cabbage! And flatulence!

I bought 3 heads.

Oh look, it's Dave the auditor!

That nice Mrs. Peaches from Kuhn orchards always has some great recipes to be picked up along with the best fruit ever!

Apples are in full season and I got some sexy "Northern Spy" apples for a gingerbread cobbler.

Kuhn's Orchards Apple Gingerbread Cobbler

4 medium apples, sliced
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup plus 3 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons cornstarch

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.Cook apples, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon and 1 cup of water until apples are almost tender.

Combine 3 tablespoons water with cornstarch, stirring until all lumps are removed. Stir into apples and cook until thickened. Pour into an 8-inch baking dish. Add topping. Bake 35 minutes.

Topping
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup molasses
2 tablespoons oil
1 egg
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Beat together the milk, molasses, oil, egg and sugar. Measure remaining ingredients into sifter and sift into egg mixture. Stir only until combined and pour over apple mixture.

The sexy secret? Molasses. Say it slowly Mooool aaases!

This week at the market (from the 14th and U weekly email fro
m Robin Shuster)

Dear 14&U Fans

We have a new producer: Hareg Messert of Chez Hareg Pastries will be bringing her classic French cookies, biscotti, pannetoni, pound cakes-- and in the future, her cakes and pies! Hareg grew up in Ethiopia and trained in French speaking Senegal before she became a pastry chef at the Ritz Carlton in DC..... so she has both Italian and French traditions! Plus she makes Vegan cookies as well. She has a charming bakery-cafe on 9th Street called Chez Hareg which has been written up in the Washingtonian several times. Lots of FREE SAMPLES.

Don't let rain keep you away from the market or from meeting our newest producer! ;-) Bring your umbrellas, stay under the tents and you will be dry and happy. The tents are filled with great produce, salads, greens, pastured meats, fruits, breads, flowers, sweets, cheeses, honey, ciders and.... Halloween pumpkins. Garner still has summer produce -- yea for those Northern Neck farms-

News:

Beef at Truck Patch
Brussels Sprouts and Romanesco cauiliflower-broccoli at Truck Patch
Collards and LOTS of Peppers at Garner
Scallions at Mountain View
Fall flavors at Dolcezza

Faucher Flower's last week for the season.

Mountain View: Always Pesticide -free Salad greens, bok choi, Chinese Cabbage, Red and Green tomatoes (think fried green tomatoes!), kale, Swiss Chard, Turnips, Beets, arugula, sweet potatoes, potatoes, scallions, mustard greens and eggs!

Truck Patch now has BEEF: steaks, ground, roasts, chuck, brisket, hamburger patties, flank, Grass -fed and finished on their own choice of grass or grain Brussels sprouts, romanesco cauliflower, cabbage, arugula, kale, spinach, mesclun, radishes, tomatoes, last of the vine picked heirlooms, a few peppers, red and white potatoes, broccoli, savoy and green cabbage (yes, you can buy just a half!) and that weird cone-shaped Romaneco cauliflower-broccoli. Looks like an Arcimboldo painting of people made of vegetable faces. Very flavorful. (Scientist have been fighting over whether it is a broccoli or a cauliflower.) Plus their pastured pork of all cuts and sausages and bacon.

Dolcezza: MORE THAN JUST A SUMMER DESSERT Some of their sorbets are savory....and many people use them as appetizers or serve them between courses. The Lemon Opal Basil is a perfect palate cleanser! Last week I fell in love with both the Pear and the Pumpkin Cinnamon flavors. The first is just like biting into a perfectly ripe bartlett and the second was a slice of a rich pumpkin pie. (With the added benefit that it has MUCH less fat and many fewer calories).

Keswick: Their 100% Jersey cow milk makes delicious yogurt, chocolate pudding and both aged raw milk and fresh pasteurized cheeses. Cheddars, vermeers and other aged raw milk cheeses. Lots of feta, quark, ricotta, too. Try some of Keswick blue cheese with a hamburger or steak! My favorite yogurt. Blue cheese and pear, apples and cheddar are cheese and fruit marriages!

Kuhn: Honeycrisp, mutsu, gala, empire, jonathan, elstar, cortland, jonagold, northern spy, and other apples along with tomatoes, lots of winter squash (Please please please try the Italian butternut!) , pumpkins of all sizes, shapes and colors, honey, chestnuts, onions, sweet peppers ,a few red raspberries, asian pears and bartletts. Cider made from elstar, jonamac, honeycrisp, gala.

McCleaf: Their cider is excellent for drinking cold or hot with mulling spices for our ( cooler evenings or cooking. Apples, UV filtered and Pasteurized cider, kale, squash, okra, tomatoes, peppers.

I've Moved my 401K !

I've moved my 401K to the pumpkin in my living room window. There's so little left it fits nicely in my Fairy Tale Pumpkin purchased at the 14th and U Farmer's Market.

And if the market continues to go down I will make a pie.

My Notorious Blogebrity

Despite my first name and picture being on this blog I am still startled when a stranger mentions my blog. Do that many people really read this thing? Or is my blog so limited in scope that my Blogebrity reaches no further than two or three blocks from my house which is where most of my interactions with the Herbarazzi occurs.

The latest encounter occurred at the 14th and U Farmers Market where one of the vendors asked if I had a food blog. Yikes, was I about to get a heirloom tomato facial? Had I suggested that his produce was less than organic? His carrots were limp? No snap in his snap beans? Crooked zucchini? No wait, I always have kind words for Farmers Markets--especially my home market! Feeling safe
from Swiss chard in a definitely unneutral spot I confessed that I had a blog but it wasn't about food.(1)

He said wasn't sure how he found my blog but he found it through random Googling (2) and liked it. Whew! Also he recognized me by the Tractor Supply Company baseball cap I was wearing.

Note to self if you are seeking Blogebrity, always wear in public the same clothing you are wearing in the profile picture of your blog. You not only save a lot of money but you will be thought of as eccentric and perhaps colorful, instead of cheap and crazy.

It was a beautiful August day here today and I hope you got out and enjoyed it.

Pictured above is "Chorus Line of Farmers Market Booty" August 9, 2008.

(1) Actually I don't know what my blog is about. I just know its not about grammar.
(2) Most random Google searches to my blog involve "High School Musical" or "TMNT"

14th and U Farmer's Market 2008!

Update 2009: The market will open Saturday May 2, 2009 (9:00am-1:00pm)

I missed visiting presidential candidate Hillary Clinton cut the opening ribbon of the 14th and U Farmers market and release 10 free range doves into the the air which she immediately shot down provin' that she is a good ole gal with farm cred. However, I did get there in time for the Breadline's delicious and chewy olive loaf which last year always seemed to go early in the day ever since the Bush twins proclaimed it the bestest bread ever for nursing a hangover.

The opening of the hyper competitive 2008 Farmers Market Pro-Am Season was kicked off with the Saturday May 10 debut of the 14th and U Farmers Market. Located in front of the George "Superman" Reeve's Center, the mart will run every Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

This Kuhns Orchard's rhubarb combined with strawberries trucked in from the Northern Neck of Virginia
will make a great pie when I get home. Or maybe I should use Cindy McCain's old family recipe?

What's for dinner? Mountain View Farm's green garlic and asparagus roasted in olive oil and sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. Michelle Obama is proud to make this for her family.

A simple farm maiden (possibly Amish) brings flowers to sell in the big city in order to save the family farm from foreclosure.

I am not of fan of the radish due to Herb Sr once forcing me to eat a radish as a child not realizing how delicate yet explosive my gag reflex was. Nevertheless, wipe out that mental image and take a gander at these weapons of mass projection--they are gorgeous!

Farmers Market Booty Still Life May 2008

Market director Robin Shuster has assured us that cheese will be available starting in June.

Like this blog needs more cheese!

Update: Sunday May 11

The number 1 rule in food blogging is to remember to take the picture before you start eating it. Needless to say it is a great tasting strawberry rhubarb pie!

Smoke from 40 Years Ago

As I read the articles about the 40th anniversary of the 1968 riots in Washington DC following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, most of the themes center around ruin, rebirth and recovery --but where are the stories from the residents?

My house is located one block from 14th and U St. The riots began April 4 1968 at the People's Drug Store at 14th and U around 9:30 PM. Before it ended three days later 12 people had been killed, more than 1000 had been injured and over 6,100 arrested. By the time the last blaze had been extinguished over 1,200 buildings had been burned, including over 900 stores, devastating for years vast stretches of 14th St, 7th St and H St NE.

So what happened at our house? You had to be one of the first to smell the smoke and hear the sirens and the sounds of glass breaking. What did you do? Did you feel safe? At one point there were 200 fires burning simultaneously in the city. Did you stay in our house or evacuate?

What was your opinion on what was happening in our city? Were you outraged? Anguished? Saddened? Supportive?

As I sit on the steps of the porch I look down at the outside faucet. Were you prepared to use this and your hose if the flames spread down the block from 14th St? The Fire and Police Department were overwhelmed and would not have been able to help you. Closing windows and drawing curtains won't keep out smoke. Were your eyes burning? Did you have children in the house? Were they coughing? Crying? What did you tell them? What did you hear on radio and television? What rumors were you hearing?

Eventually President Johnson dispatched some 13,600 federal troops to quell the violence. What was it like seeing armed armed troops on the streets--reassuring or frightening? The occupation of Washington was the largest of any American city since the Civil War. Again did you stay? Or did you leave?

What is your story?

A few years ago I was ripping up some carpet in a closet that was once part of the attic. I recall the slight but distinct smell of smoke and at the time just assumed that smokers had once lived in the house.

Now I wonder...

Maryland SUV Drivers --You Know Who You Are!

MARYLAND: A THINKING MAN'S DELAWARE

After almost getting hit twice Friday October 26 5:00-5:07 PM 13th and U and 14th and U NW, Washington DC

Dearest State of Maryland SUV drivers:

1. I can understand your eagerness each day to leave as quickly as possible the squalid commuter tax-less confines of DC! I mean DC isn't even a STATE yet here is where the job is located that allows you to afford the lease on your big ass Chesapeake Bay polluting vehicle so SLOW THE F**K DOWN when leaving here until you see the Gladys Noon Spellman Parkway sign!!!! Repeat: I said SLOW DOWN and don't be so babe ruthless behind the wheel! Stop and smell the Black-Eyed Susans!!!

2. When attempting to turn left at a busy DC intersection, one waits until oncoming traffic has cleared before safely turning left. You do not spring forward like a filly in heat at Preakness the second the light turns green daring those in wimpy paid-for hybrids to hit your rolling over-sized Star Spangled Crab Trap while you are illegally turning left.

3. When pedestrians are in the crosswalk, you do not drive your Panhandle Wal Mart-on-Wheels into the crosswalk weaving your merry Old Bay between DC weenies who are wussy enough to walk or use Metro.

4. I am sure that parallel parking your
big carbon footprint Yeti is challenging and you have have few opportunities to practice in your souless suburban Eastern Bore Maryland apartment complex. However, your solution of parking next to a perfectly good parking spot while blocking a lane of traffic AND said parking spot is not only illegal but stupid and a Terrapin idea, hon! At least make an attempt to to parallel park that Ocean Pity Monster and if you Oriole a few bumpers of nearby parked DC cars, why that's their fault by not being a Demolition Derby visionary like you!

5. Putting your blinker signals on while doing the old "College Park Dine and Dash" into Starbucks when parked in a "No Parking from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM" traffic lane does not make your Old Line trashy double-wide skipjack invisible or allow other cars to magically pass through it.

6. Get off your cellphone! It is against DC law and despite your clear disdain for anything or anyone DC, this law does apply to you even though you live in the great Free State of Maryland! I know! And DC isn't even a STATE! And you OWN lease a big expensive SUV!!! I realize your commute is edgar allan poe boring and you really need to update your big haired girlfriend on everything your raven b*tch boss said to you at the copier today but you are the one who chose to make a daily 60 minute steaming calvert contribution to global warming. Some day your Prince will come and his name will NOT be Georges! So channel your inner harbor, own it and GET the HELL off the phone, pay attention and drive a little more carefully so I don't have to personally...

Love,

Herb of DC
